This class covered the fundamentals of technical drafting, lettering, line weights, terminology, symbols, and the formatting of construction documents. We learned how to apply all the fundamentals to a semester long project.

This assignment got our class comfortable with precise lettering, preparing us for our future drafting projects. We had to create lettering in 1/4 scale and 1/8 scale.

Lettering Assignment
Stair Section Assignment

For this stair section, we had to exactly copy the first image on the left. It was a little tricky as there were some measurements but not all. It took a bit of time, however in the end it turned out well.

Building Section Assignment

For this assignment we were to reproduce the image on the left without tracing using the scale provided. The objective was to experience how a designer has to quickly sketch up drawings a lot, especially when it comes to being on site.

ADA stands for Americans with Disabilities Act. We were able to learn more about the accommodations that are required in certain spaces and buildings for the disabled. According to the ADA and the ICC [International Code Council] certain spaces such as a public restroom must be ADA approved. This draft helped us work on the spacing adjustments needed to meet ADA standards. We had to include a 5'-0" turn around, an ADA stall, a changing station and partition doors.
ADA Restroom
Wall Detail

We had to draft a wall detail from a side view in order to see all the layers. We then had to label each piece.
Residential Project - Phase I: Demolition & Floor Plan

Demolition Plan

For this project we worked for our clients Mr. and Mrs. Palmer who live in this small apartment in New York City, NY. They have requested an open space leading from the kitchen into the living room, and that the study would be turned into a bedroom. Kicking off Phase 1, I drafted up a Demolition plan showing dashed lines to indicate what walls would be taken down.
Floor Plan
The Floor Plan consists of the final layout for a space where furniture is shown, (and if there are any) new walls are shown. I drafted a couple small walls in different locations, and was able to move the washer and dryer that was in the kitchen to the bathroom.

Residential Project - Phase II: Reflected Ceiling Plan
For this lighting plan, I looked up different kinds of light fixtures. Once I got a couple together I made symbols for each and drew them on the plan. Then I drew dashed lines for what lights I wanted to group together to one electrical circuit. The light switch is represented by a small money sign. The chart on the left is called a Lighting Legend. We had to write the name of each fixture next to the symbol representing it on the Floor plan. In addition to the lighting, I drew some wooden beams to give the apartment a different look.

Residential Project - Phase III: Elevation(s)

Taking a look back at the floor plan, the symbols shown above are displayed in the kitchen. An elevation in short, is a detailed look at a 'wall' or 'one direction' as if you are standing right in front of your design. The two elevations give a small glimpse of what the Kitchen and home will look like.
Residential Project - Phase IV: Sections & Details

Section and Detail drafts are very helpful to help display further detail on any built in item. In this instance the kitchen cabinets and kitchen shelving is build in. All I had to do was show a side view of the cabinets. I drew the crown molding to give a better idea of the small details of the item, hence the name of this Phase.
Residential Project - Phase V: Doors & Windows
Our class created a draft of the windows and doors throughout the apartment as they were all getting replaced. For the assignment sake, we were supposed to do at least 4 different doors in order to improve on those drafting skills. Each specific drawing is labelled, and has the specific scale.

Residential Project - Phase VI: Draft Cover Sheet
The Cover Sheet introduces a project by stating general information. It states the Client's address, the designers of the project, the index for each phase and has a symbols legend.
