This class introduced visual thinking as well as the elements and principles of design. Concentration of the elements of design through production of artwork was used through a variety of materials and methods. Emphasis in this course is focused on the understanding of elements and principles of design and how they integrate to form fully realized works of art.

Self-Portrait Project

Lastly, I used my mom to show some features. The more I looked at her photo, the more I realized how much we don’t look alike. The only thing I really noticed was that we have the same chin so that’s where I placed a horizontal strip of her chin on my picture. We are both blonde as well, so I used her hair too. I look like my dad more, but I still wanted to see if there was any similarity between my mom and I.

As the first assignment of the semester it was a funky but fun one. The objective was to pick four family members or friends that have had a substantial impact on our life. I specifically chose three of my sisters and my mom. We had to print a black and white image of ourselves, and then weave strips of the family/friends we chose to a piece where a feature might be the similar.

My sister Ren who is a year older looks like me the most. She is the closest in age and is my closest sister/friend out of all my family. I can fully be myself around her. I used her eyebrow because ours is similar, and then I used her cheek because we have a similar face shape.

My sister Jennifer is probably the second person who looks a bit like me. We practically have the same eyes, and same lip shape so that’s where I filled her picture in. She was the person who drove me down to college my freshman year which meant a lot to me despite the tough times.

Third, I used my sister Lauren to be on the side of my face, and my nose. Our noses are very similar in the way they're rounded and narrowed towards our eyes. We have similar mannerisms, but not the same look. We are for sure sisters though haha!

Group Project # 1
FACS 113- Group Project_.jpg

For this project we had to create a 36" x 98" design on photoshop for the next billboard to advertise the [FACS] Family and Consumer Science Department. We wanted to capture the department's sense of community within the different branches and make them still seem like one body. By using the three principles of emphasis, unity, and proportion, we developed an advertisement that is captivating and creative.

The first principle used was emphasis through isolation. We included the focal point in the middle so that the viewer's eye would not wander off the page. Our small use of variation in color is useful because it emphasizes the department while also still being subtle enough to contain unity. Unity was the second principle exemplified in our advertisement. We used unity to demonstrate the community and similarities that the FACS department entails. There is visual unity because the viewer's eyes are first drawn to the “FACS” before the pictures surrounding the large font. The composition as a whole is organized by our group through the FACS inspired pictures.

Color Theory

The challenge for this project was to come up with a geometric design on photoshop displaying value change and balance. We were also required to choose one or more out of the colors: red, blue, yellow, white or black. I decided to create an asymmetrical design in which design elements such as unity, emphasis, and movement were displayed. It was really neat working with photoshop and finding what design worked best after trial and error.

Line & Shape, Pattern and Texture Assignment:
Alphabet Project
FACS 113- Alphabet_.jpg

This was another unique project in which we worked on photoshop. We had to find images (in their correct state) that looked like Alphabet letters. This assignment was due over thanksgiving break so I was able to find things around my house, and at the local library. The hardest part was finding them with such limitations in options compared to being at school, and making sure a viewer would be able to decipher the letters.

This was a rendering classwork that our class did. We used a fruit bowl image as reference in order to outline the general shapes. Using micron pens, I used stippling, hatching, cross-hatching, and scribbles to give this image value and texture.

In-Class Assignment: Value

An in class assignment where we drew a box/triangle shape in order to practice value change through shading.

Rendering Assignment
FACS 113 Rendering Project.jpg

This was our Rendering Project in which we worked with photoshop. It involved using a room template to create a complementary and an analogous color scheme. For the Complementary I chose to use pink and dark green. For the Analogous color scheme I chose to use orange and red as they are next to each other on the color wheel. It was a great project to experiment with and see what fabrics and materials worked and what didn't.
